Clutch hydraulics & grinding shifts
2002 Neon
198k miles
The story
-bought car with dead clutch
-replaced clutch, TOB, trans fluid, shift bushings, TB, WP, coolant, oil, etc.
-try to drive car, grinds going into 1st, 2nd, and sometimes reverse, unless shift very slowly, does not grind going into other gears. Grind lasts for ~1/4 of a second, then goes into gear
-"bled" clutch hydraulics by pushing in slave 10x, pumping pedal many times
-fluid level in res went UP (??) after/during "bleeding" (purging?)
-no change, still grinds
So the way I see it, either the synchros on 1 & 2 are shot (no synchro on reverse?) or the hydraulics are not completely disengaging the clutch (hope so).
Is there a spec for slave push rod travel? Someone wanna measure it for me? so I can check how far my slave is actually moving.
Is there adjustment in the clutch pedal/MC linkage?
Thanks!

Yes there is. There is a bolt that the pedal connects to. Just get a flashlight and look "up" to where the pedal connects to a rod, the rod being your slave cylinder. Here is a link for what to look for. http://forum.2gn.org/viewtopic.php?t=26 . This post actually recommends to adjust it incorrectly, shortening the life of your clutch. But use that to find it. Unscrew it enough to where the pedal moves freely, and then pull it all the way up, and tighten the screw.
Also. No, it isn't synchronized in reverse, it has a lockout so you can't put it in reverse while moving forward if you tried. It REALLY sounds like you have a maladjusted clutch pedal. I don't hear about the mtx in our cars going out that much, I hear more of the ATX going out. Most of the problems with our mtxs are clutch related.

I loosened the bolt but my pedal was already all the way up.
I measured the slave travel with a tape measure and it was right at 1/2". Someone wanna see how far theirs moves? If yours goes 3/4" or something and shifts fine, then I think I'd feel okay doing the $100 gamble replacing the hydraulics.
