Never done a Half shaft replacement. NEED Help.
Hello. I found out what that whinning noise is at 55mph. Driverside CV outter joint. So I picked up a new shaft for like $67. Iv'e heard somewhere on the internet that you can just remove the 2 strut to knuckle bolts and the hub nut. So they say it's enough room to slide the shaft out of the knuckle. The BOOKs say remove tie rod end and ball joint from kuckle to remove shaft (not the stut bolts). Anyone try this method? I can remove the tie rod, but I'd like to not mess with the ball joint. ALSO, I've heard getting the driverside shaft (c-clip) out of the differantial is a pain. Feedback will be appreciated. Thanks, Frank
I typically just separate the lower ball joint from the knuckle, I've never had to separate the tie rod end on ANY car to ever remove an axle. I've seen guys remove the 2 strut bolts, but if your strut has been slotted for alignment you'll need to re-align it afterwards.
As for the c-clip, just get a pry bar between the axle and transmission case and give it a good tug. Never had a problem. And to install the shaft, use the outer joint sort of like a slide hammer to get it back in.
