Default 03 NEON Transmisson how to

i have an 03 neon sxt automatic. the transmission went out and i called around for one from the junk yard and its $700 seems steep to me for a tranny with 120,000 miles and i called a shop to see how much a new one is installled and it was $2600 and he said i could not do it my self because the computer has to be resinced with the new transmission is this true. Are these transmissions known for going out. Its my girlfriends car and she has never had the transmission serviced since it was new that is why im thinking it went out. it has 140,000 miles and no service on it.

You can do it yourself. It's best to have what's called a relearn procedure done with the TCM when you change the trans/solenoid, but not absolutely necessary. And yes, no maintenance for 140,000 miles can certainly ruin mechanical things.

what do you mean it went out? Does it do anything or once in gear (any gear) it just doesnt engage?

A mechanic told my nephew his car needed a new tranny. I got the car now and for $150 part it works fine. The mechanic also was informed this and told my nephew, yeah but it will only last a little while. Its been 2k hard NYC traffic miles (some highway) and its fine.

It won't shift into gear unless its really high Rpm and even then sometimes does not go in. Then pops right out of gear. And there is a grinding noise from under the hood.

I found an 01 neon in better shape than mine but has a bad motor. Is the 2.0 the same in both the 01 neon and 03?

The engines are yes, but some sensors and wiring are different. Transmissions and computers are different too.

keep shoppin around you'll find a trans with half the miles & price, just takes a ton of phone calls & low balling because not many people are looking for neon transmissions esp automatics so you can haggle them on the prices since it's going to sit on their shelf or lot a few more years when they can get cash now instead of waiting for the full price Esp if you show up and flash them a wad of 50's, junk yards have so much overhead these days they know they need the cash
