Default 2005 2.0l possible valve tick?

Brothers car is making a ticking noise. If i'm correct these have timing belts and not chains so going to opt that out.

it's a 2005 2.0l with about 105k on the clock. Valve tick? going to find a piece of heater hose in my shed to try and locate the noise.

Alright this was the first time i heard it it doesn't sound like a valve tick. It's coming from the front of the engine. Can a timing belt make a tick noise from slaping against the cover? not to sure on this. I hate little 4 bangers and this is the only one i've done work on which was just replacing his cam position sensor. kind of sick atm so couldn't really locate the noise with a piece of hose.

Edit. It doesn't seem like it's running rough. The noise does get faster when the engine speed increases. It looks like his serpintine belt tensioner could be going out? it does shake a bit. Hope it's nothing to bad no one likes spending cash on repairs and he doesn't keep the most in his pocket after bills.

Most likely one or more lifters. Your brother will have to learn how to live with that ticking, unless he's willing to spend some time and effort replacing the rocker arms as the lifter themselves are not removable.

You could try an oil change with Rislone added.

just FYI daksnbeers, if he's not had the timing belt changed, 105k is the sepecified interval. much better to change it before it breaks. this IS an interference engine, so if the belt breaks, there most certainly will be valve damage.(90+% certainty, very lucky if it doesn't. - like spending your last $1 on a lotto ticket, and winning multi-millions - lucky.)
