Default Timing belt issues....

Anyone have experience with their timing belt breaking on a 2.0? About a week ago, mine went while I was driving highway speeds (I know, I know...should have changed it long ago). I was cautiously optimistic that it didn't do any other damage so I had the timing belt, water pump, etc. replaced.
Now the thing stutters and shakes at idle and the check engine light is on (haven't had it read). The mechanic let me know this was happening and attributes it to bad compression at idle on cylinder 1 (60 psi). He told me that if they added oil to the cylinder the compression came up, which should indicate that the valves are okay, and he thinks the compression ring on the cylinder is f'd.
What do you guys think? Is my motor toast? Is the timing off or something?
For the record, it's a 2002 with 127K on it.
Thanks for any information guys.

Yeah, I wound up figuring out the valves were f'd. Car was kinds beat up anyway and not worth a new motor to me, so I traded it and bought a '09 Civic.
Out of the dodges for now
