Default Crank Sprocket Removal and Replacement

Hi,

I purchased a fully remanufactured engine for my 2000 Neon. I need to move all accessories and mountings to the new block. I'm breaking down the front of the motor and I'm not sure how to remove the Crank Sprocket. Looks like I need a puller. Doing some Google searches, I have learnt that replacement is as important, if not more important than the removal because it needs to be at the correct depth to align well with the timing belt.

Any help you can give me will be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance!

TRG

Hey man Im currently in the process of rebuilding my 05's engine. Ive gotten pretty much everything off the block except the crank sprocket is holding me back. After I took off the crank pulley I stupidly assumed that I could take the crank sprocket off with the same tool....ended up chipping it so I have to buy a new one which is only $25 but still.....Anyways you should click on this link http://www.ertyu.org/steven_nikkel/n...2000/EPL_9.pdf Its the service manual for the year of your car. Go to page 48. You'll see that you need a special tool to get this part off and another to get it back on again. The one to remove it is Special tool 6793 and C-4685-C2. To install you need special tool 6792. As you can see in the pictures im at a standstill. I refuse to buy the special tool for removal because I firmly believe that I can adapt the crank pulley puller with some long bolts to get the job done. If I do this then I will post more pics Crank Sprocket Removal and Replacement-dv1y983.jpg Crank Sprocket Removal and Replacement-bo4gsbv.jpg

by the way, the bolts you see sticking out my crank sprocket are the intake manifold bolts. I was trying to see if they would be long enough to use but they weren't.

I pulled the Crank Sprocket using a harmonic balance puller. I saw the 3 threaded holes and assumed they were for pulling the sprocket. Ace has 4" 6m threaded rod that worked perfectly with washers of increasing size to expand across the puller slots. To re-install, I use a 30mm socket and tapped it on with a dead blow hammer. When it was half way, I used a large bolt (again from Ace) to crank the sprocket into place.

I believe I could have tapped it on all the way with the dead blow.

Darn near impossible without the special tools. Be careful you do not mess up the threads in the crank (tools cheaper than a crank!). must use the threaded adapter to press back on. It is a long press (about an inch, to fully seat on crank) Advance Auto loans tools, and should have the puller. I bought an aftermarket set on Ebay. There are several out there,NAPA, OTC, ATD, OEM, and a fer others. Search on Ebay for Chrysler crank puller to see what is out there.
