Grinding in my 03 neon SE
Hello all, got a problem, I think I know what it is but not sure.
My neon has had a bit of grinding noise when making hard left turns or hard left u-turns under power. I also noticed a bit of a limp in the wheel felt like it was coming from the passenger side.
I figured at 150K that I got a bad cv axel, considering they are the ones from factory. While I was at it, I had quite of bit of clunking for last 20k miles and been dealing with it, and recently a squeaking noise coming from the driver side wheel when turning the steering wheel left or right. I could tell my tie rod end balljoint was dried out. (after I inspected it, had too much play.)
So this past weekend I replaced both driver and passenger side axels, both control arms and both tie rod ends.
The clunking and squeaking is gone but the limp and grinding is still there.
The grinding sound, sounds like it's coming from the front center of the car below the center console next to the gas pedal.
My guess is, the limp is the tire on the passenger side and grinding could be wheel bearing on the driver side or differential bearings where the cv shaft connects to the tranny.
I had a similar situation few years back, the car would making a rubbing/grinding effect when you made right turns under power at that time I had no time for fixing cars and took it to the shop. They said it was a passenger side motor mount causing the problem. I didn't believe them, after 4 different shops saying it could be this and that, motor mount didn't sound too bad after all. So I took a chance had it replaced, and the noise went away.
So I'm wondering if the driver tranny/engine mount (never replaced) is causing the same situation to play out again but this time on the driver side; or if it's a wheel or differential bearing causing the noise.
What do you guys think?
