Front crank seal installation help... a couple questions.
Hello fellow neon owners. I have a 02 es sohc 163k engine. Im going to change front crank and cam seals. ( water pump tensioner and belt are new)
Questions I need advice about are: On the outside diameter of the front crank seal, do I lube it? I know to lube the seals lip ( inside that rides the crank) .
The service manual says to lube inner and outer sides of the cam seal with clean engine oil. but says to just lube the crank seal with clean engine oil.
Does that mean lube the hole crank seal?
I'm going to lube the inside of both seals and I have successfully done a front cam seal on another neon in the past and I lubed that cam seal on both sides.
anyone please share thoughts... Its the oil pump, front main, front crank seal whatever you call it. . the outside diameter goes in dry? I know a Rear main goes in dry. So confusing... Thanks

I think the reason the manual says to lube the cam seal with oil is, because it has a rubber coating on it. So, it's sort of the same reason why most condoms are lubricated. Dry doesn't work well.
The crank seal has a steel outer diameter, so you're right; it is like a rear main and can be installed dry. I usually put a little RTV sealant on mine just as a little extra insurance.
