wheels/ tires
Hello, and thanks for having this forum; I've already read a ton onfo that I know will be usefull. However, I can't find any details on wheel and tire sizes, which surprises me.. maybe someone can provide a link to some threads as the search function is not giving me any love.
I just bought a 2000 neon 2.0L. rims and tires are all mismatched, and I want to put a good wheel and tire on the car.
From the little bit I could find online, I'm leaning toward a 16" 40mm rim. My goal is to put a wider tire and not a super low profile (since pot holes are terrible here). From what I've read, I speculate that a 205/ is about as wide as I will be able to go, is this true?
I'd prefer a bit wider if possible. How tall can I go? There doesn't seem to be a lot of room under the strut.
I'm going to replace the struts also, as the mileage is over 100k, so If there is a particular strut that will allow bigger tires, I can consider this.
Please point me in the right location.. sorry about the winded post

Thanks,, how wide? 70 series would be the height being 70% of the width added below and above the 14" rim, correct?
What wheels are you getting? You need to pick those first as that will determine what size tires you can get. You aren't going to be able to go wider than a 215 tire I think it is with the factory struts. Even aftermarket, you might get a 225 but a 215 is the safest bet.
hey there i have on my 05 neon a set of 205/60/15's on the OEM Aluminums and they fit with 60k miles on them and no rubbing. im replacing them tomorrow with a 205/65/15, which are approx .5 inch wider overall.... i have no worries about that rubbing either. the pic in my sig is my old 2000 but they had tires on them before i got rid of it and got my 05 and swapped the tires :P
forgot I left out the size 195/70/14 these almost make the ride close to my VW but when this care is donated to my nephew in a year it will probably have 185's as he gets to buy his 1st set of tires hehe

I personally would bet for 215/60 R14 if you will mount them in steel rims at your limit.
For the 15" rims probably 205/60 would be the best ones.
I had a set of 215/60 R14 in another '00 Neon and they had a good result and good driving. Now I have 185/70 R14 and my '05 runs really well too.

Sorry, I wrote a post yesterday, but I guess I didn't actually post it.
Thanks for all the replies.
I'm torn between a few rims. I'm heavily leaning towards 15" rims now, and they will either have a 38 or 40mm backspace
I'm reading all the advise, and I've decided against the 225's, but I'd really like to have 215's if possible. I see from some tire manufacture sites that6.5" wide rims will work (range 6.0-7.5)
Also, I've noted that Albius said he had 215/60 on 14 inch rims, so the width shouldn't be a problem. Will the extra height cause an issue on this car?
Thanks

I kept the 14 stock steels because they gave a lil softer ride here in Dallas Ft Worth rough highways & roads, but are cheap & tires were dirt cheap.. stock wheel covers are easy to sand an paint too lol
I never went with srt wheels thinking that mpg would worsen liek it did with 22's on my ram 1500
