Default Transmission Problems?

Hi! I have a base model 2002 Neon. It is an automatic. Recently when I start my car and put it in drive; I can drive about 20 ft. Then there is a squealing noise and the transmission cuts out and I'm in neutral. I'm not very good with trannys and any help would be awesome! Thanks!

Yes. We replaced the fluid and changed the filter.

Before or after the problem occured?

If you don't know transmissions, or know someone who knows transmissions, I suggest you take it to someone who does. Transmission problems are difficult to diagnose over the internet. Someone knowledgable willl have to look at it to determine whats wrong.

Any transmission codes stored? You'd need to use an actual code reader to see them.

I hate to give you bad news, but 02' was the worst year ever for Neon automatic transmissions. First year for the 4 speed automatic. We bought our Neon new in 02' and I always felt like something was a little off. Like the transmission was holding the car back or it wasn't matched to engines power band. I maintain my cars pretty well, so I was surprised when the trans took a crap around 81K. It would start whining and then stop working at random times. I tried fluid changes, speed sensors, solenoid pack, etc..and after it left the wife stranded a couple of times I had to take drastic measures, so I went to Pick n pull and pulled the trans out of wrecked 03'. Since then I think the car has more get up and go than it ever did before. Good luck.
