Default New to me Neon - lost key

Hi everybody,

I just got a 2001 Neon from my next door neighbor because he was tired of it.

Now the only problem is that I was gone on the weekend and he supposedly put the key on top of one of the tires on my Dakota but never mentioned that to me before I moved the truck so the city could get the streets swept up. Well, I'm assuming it has gone by-by and all he gave me now was a cut key which only opens the door. I tried it in the ignition switch and it turns, dash lights come on but it doesn't crank.

Is there a way to bypass the security system to start the car? Can I just replace the lock cylinder with another with it's own matching key and get it to start?

If anyone can help, I'm all ears!

It would have to be coded to the car, right?

you can take the ignition switch off the cylinder lock, has 3 small security hex screws but a small flat blade will take them out an just start it with a screw driver until you get a new key I been doing that on my 2000 beater for years after going thru 3 lock cylinders

TejasMtnBiker, does your car have an immobilizer on the steering column? The key with the transponder chip inside it?

You could change everything in the system out to a non-immobilizer system. That's kind of the whole purpose of the system: to make it difficult to steal your car without the right key
