Default splash guard question

how important is it? due to my school refuses to fix giant potholes on the roads on campus i ran over a giant pothole tonight and broke off what appears to be a piece of my splash gaurd. they every so often fill it up with gravel (from one of the gravel parking lots), i was lucky enough to drive over tonight when all the gravel was gone due to the fact it gets heavy traffic. so my question is, if it is the splash gaurd do i need to get it replaced soon? and if so is this something i can possibly make the school pay for? and if i can, is it possible to do it without reporting it to insurance?

i included a pic so you all can clue me in if my assumption is right about it being the splash gaurd.

thanks for any help

Default heres a little more info

took a quick look under the car and determined it broke off on the front passanger side right behind the bumper. there a metal box of somekind that looked like it may have been exposed because of it. dont have much of clue of what it might be since i am almost completely mechanicly uninclined. my main concern is that the alternator being relatively low in neon is getting it wet and causing further damage.

thanks again for any help

I'd have to go look at my car to be sure. But I don't think its anything major. If I remember correctly...the windshield washer fluid resevior is over there. As far as making the school pay for it, you can try. I bent a wheel a few weeks ago going through construction and I bitched at them for not posting bump signs or even putting cones down so I hit a change in pavement of about 2-3 inches at about 25-30mph and bent a rim. They paid for it in full after I complained over the phone and in a letter. I sent them a letter explaining the entire ordeal, included photos of damage and also receipt of how much a new wheel cost. And had they decided to not pay for it I probably would have filed a claim in court and they would have lost which is probably why they just paid it. I didn't report anything to my insurance company.

Default took a look under the car today

looks like the plastic piece was there to prevent dirt from getting on some belts. i am probably just going to take it to a shop tomorrow and get them to fix it. quick question though, the only dealerships around here are ford and chevy, i prefer to take it them because i believe they will do a better job. i am afraid if i just take to some random shop around here they will just slap a cheap piece of plastic on it that sort of fits. if it costs a lot to repair i will defiantly be complaining to the school.
