Gentleman, having a problem but only sometimes . most times you hit the key it starts. sometime you hit the key and the dash lights go out as usual
when car it about to start but it does nothing . you have to go back and forth with the key till eventually the starter engages and she starts right up.
thought it was the starter, replaced it . fine for a day , today same thing had to hit the key 20 times till starter kicked in , something in the column ?? any thoughts ?
Thank you , Bob

Welcome to the 2nd Gen Neon forum.
Scan for trouble code clues & post All code Numbers. If you don't have a scan tool, or code reader that'll make it easier, we can trigger the computer to blink the codes using the dash CEL, by cycling the ignition key from off to on three times, ending in On & make note of the codes blinked & post the Numbers. Or most auto parts stores will scan at no charge if the CEL is lit, or we are having problems. Trouble codes can help focus a trouble shoot. Some thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find.

The P0340 is for the cam sensor Circuit. The cam sensor tells the ECM when to switch the fuel injectors on, so if its PID goes missing, the computer won't know when to switch the fuel injectors on, so it isn't going to start, or if it does it might run poorly if the circuit is intermittent, or the signal is wimpy. https://www.obd-codes.com/p0340
SO, check out the cam sensor, its electrical connector, damaged/corroded pins, sockets & wiring, all the way to the ECM, looking for insulation damage from pinched wires, cuts, melted insulation from rubbing against something hot, or that vibrates. With the vehicle at warm idle, try a wiggle, or thump test of the cam sensor & its electrical connector & wiring, to see if you can induce rough running, or a stall. More thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find.
