Engine surging
Hey everyone...
Having a issue that has me really stumped. I bought this 2000 Dodge Neon as a project car and I've worked out every bug, but the last one. The issue is when I'm either parked or moving the engine surges with a total loss of power when I get to 3500-4000 rpms. It will get better for a second and cutout again. Things I've done or checked:
- Fuel pump replaced
- Crank and cam sensors replaced-
- Plugs and wires replaced
- Temp sensor replaced
- Makeup vacuum tube replaced. It had a big leak.
Pulled Catalytic Converter, problem still was present.
One thing I've noticed is when it's acting up the short term fuel trims will both go to 0 and not move until I let off the gas. If I keep pushing the gas pedal to the floor during it acting up it will get slightly worse and I will smell gas.

Welcome to the 2nd Gen Neon forum.
You've been busy on this puppy, 144 reads but no replies yet, so will see if I can get things started
Trying to rev our engines as high as you say you were doing without a load isn't a good idea, as that could cause damage, so the engineers have the engine computer limit how many Unloaded rpm it can make, by turning off the fuel injectors so the engine won't over rev, come unraveled & make a mess!!!!
So, you may have been bumping the rev limiter & that might be some of the cause of the higher rpm engine surge????
Scan for trouble code clues & post All code Numbers, as they can help focus a trouble shoot. Some beginning thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find.
