ok i read up on it theres no way 2 tighten the brakes with a bolt cuz they r self adjusting which means u have 2 back up and stop a lot of simes to tighten them i think or at least thatz the impression i got from what i read i no self adjusting brakes arent the best thing in the world and dont really work all of the time so ne other ideas would b good 2

So how am i *drifting*(lol) around corners if the rear wheels dont lock up when i pull the e-brake? I thought that was the whole point of an e-brake, to lock the back tires when you need them in an E-mergency??

no the e-brake is there so if u have a manual then ur car wont roll away and also to help stop in an emergency but its not meant to stop the car and u can drift around turns in a neon without pullin the e-brake cuz its so light i do it all the time

You don't really want the rear wheels to lock up in an emergency, thats the whole point of ABS. If you don't have any hydrolic brakes and need to stop, then the rear wheels lock when you pull the E-brake that could create a very bad situation.

LOL, its a lot easier to lock the wheels up in the snow with no traction. Try it on some dry pavment see if you can lock them up. As I said I always thought mine needed to be adjusted, it works on hills so it was not a high priority and I always forgot when I was under the car. I have never owned a car that you could not lock up the rears with the ebrake, maybe its a neon thing? It does make sense for the average driver though.

If you want to tighten the brake tighter than the auto adjusting mechanism does, there is a way to manually adjust them. Behind the inside cover for the drim brakes, on the top side, there is a rubber peice that is somewhat of a rectangle. Pull out that piece, and there is a hole, which is for you access the adjusting mechanism. There are teeth on it so that you can turn it with a flat head screwdriver. Just poke a screwdriver in the hole, and use it to turn the adjusting screw upward. keep doing it till you cant anymore.

My rear wheels used to lock up on dry pavement when I put the hand brake on, but don't anymore, or only a little squawk. I don't really care so much, just pointing that out.
