The grease your friend is referring to is for the pads on the backing plate that the brake shoes ride against. There are probably 3 or 4 places on the backing plate for each shoe to glide against and they will correspond to a tab on the edge of the shoe itself. These "pads" need a FILM of grease applied once in a while for the brake shoes to operate smoothly. If they are dry there is a good possibility that squeeking can occur from lack of lubrication at these contact points. Again these pads are on the backing plate NOT the brake pads-"Shoes". Never apply any type of lubricant to the faces of the actual baking surfaces.

I did quite a bit of research on rear brakes a couple of months ago. I wanted
to put the most durable brakes possible in the rear so I would never have to
change them again- atleast for 70K miles. The problem with most brake shops
is that they will use cheap brake pads so you will keep coming back for more
service. Well, I decided I was going to put an end to this by doing it myself.

I found out that the best shoe pads made for the front disc brakes are the
high carbon metalic or the ceramic ones. They are quiet and last much longer.
For the rear brakes (20% usage), unfortunately, only standard drum brake pads
are available for Neons. I did find this one auto parts store that tried to assure
me that they had ceramic pads for the back and I bought them. However, I later
found out that they were standard pads (model number starting with FF is standard).
I looked in Autozone, OReilys, Pep Boys, Advanced Auto Parts and Napa. If you
find out there are ceramic pads available, let me know.

 

Just to chime in on Chrysler corp. brakes. The OEM's stuff is about the poorest quality out there. I worked for Chrysler as a mechanical engineer from 1983 to 2001 and brakes were always on people's top ten list of complaints. Yes, they can be noisy. Frequently they need to be repalced with very low mileage. If you are replacing the pads, always be sure to grease the back side. I have found that replacing pads and rotors with a good semi metallic set, like Wagner makes an amazing difference. This was particularly true for my '01 Town and Country Minivan. The stock rotors are thin, and don't disipate heat well. The new Wagners that I replaced the stock rotors with were much thicker and heavier. Great improvement!

 

i like the noise from my '01 and i dont like my neighbors much, so ill keep the brakes like they are.

 

On my 2003 Dodge SX the rear brakes used to squeal from the time new shoes were installed! As someone else said, when the weather was humid and the car is left parked for several hours brakes can get really noisy, until they warm up a bit. On my car the noise was so loud that sometimes people on the sidewalk stepped nervously aside as they thought a car was about to hit them!

I'm just wondering how much are a set of rear brakes for a 2000 dodge neon, just because my buddy was an idiot and i was driving around 90km/h and he decided to pull the e-brake and now i have this stupid squeeling noise comming from the back end of my car everytime i drive it, hopefully, all i need is a new set of brakes. If someone could get back to me i'd greatly appreciate it.
