Car reving really hard.
I have a 2000 dodge neon with over 100,000 miles. My car is reving really hard at idle and even when I drive at about 20 mph or less. I let a family member use my car for a few days and now its like this. I knew previously that I needed a tune up. Today noticed that my engine light is on. When I lifted up the hood, I noticed the engine rocking forward and backwards. I may need an oil change as well, I have to check my records, it seems that the company that changed my oil last, may have put the wrong mileage, on the form that tells me what my mileage was when I got the oil change, and what it would be 3,000 miles later. I'm afraid to drive the car, it feels like its going to literally explode. Can someone tell me what maybe wrong w/ the car?, does anyone have any advice for me?
If the motor is rocking, that sounds like a bad motor mount. The family member would not happen to be a younger person that might have driven the car a little hard? That will put a bad motor mount to death real quick. A bad motor mount will screw with the cables, also a vacum line could be loose or disconnected.
The person who used my car claimed that it may have been a bad batch or a different type of gas that they used, that caused the car to rev hard. They used the same octane that I use (87), but they mentioned that a different brand from what I normally used may have hurt the car, such as Amoco, instead of Exxon, Sunoco instead of...
Ok..
First thing.. I have used about 12 or so different brands of fuel and I haven't noticed any big issues. The only thing that is different is when I change the octane.. (love the pull of 94 octane!)
I would have the car towed to a local shop or dealership, wouldn't risk my car if my engine was rocking..
And I would definately talk to the family member and ask them about their driving habits...[:-]
Best of luck!
