Stick Shift Transmission Fluid
Easy look just behind the left half shaft for a rubber plug. Pull out plug and oil should be up to the hole on level ground. Syphon gun (sort of like a grease gun) is an easy way to get it ito there. Just make sure to use right fluid. If it is ATF+3 then use an ATF +3 if +4 use +4. OK to use redline C+ which does both but be very weary of any DEXRON or Mercon that is supposed to meat it or especially MTF(manual trans fluids) as may not work out so well. The fibre synchro faces do not care for that too much. Use what it is supposed to have and all will be well.
your 2nd gen, for whatever reason, shipped with ATF+4 in there from the factory. You can use ATF+4 as recommended by the dealer. Or, if you want better shifting and longer synchro life, you can tell them you have a PT Cruiser. It's the same tranny, but uses Mopar Manual Transaxle Lubricant, which runs $12 a quart or so (you'll need 3 bottles).
For what it's worth, the 1st gen Factory Service Manuals say, in bold print, to never use automatic transaxle fluid in the 5-speed. The parts guy will give you the riot act if you tell him you want to put ATF+4 in your PT Cruiser tranny, which is the exact same trany that's in the Neon...
Best of luck!
