Reverting to Stock Exhaust
I’m looking at buying an ’04 Neon SXT. The thing is, the previous owner installed some sort of aftermarket cat-back exhaust that sounds like something a teenager would drive (no offense to you teenagers out there). The car has the rear valance with openings for two exhaust outlets, so I’m considering installing a stock system (probably just muffler and tailpipe) from an RT.
Can anyone tell me what parts I’ll need? Part numbers would be helpful as well. Also, any thoughts on whether the R/T exhaust will be quieter than a typical aftermarket cat-back?
Thanks.

heres the cat-back from an RT for under $200 RT Cat Back. that should include all the parts you would need.
it come down to how patient and capable you are.
myself, i usualy try to DIY my stuff. Its a great way to get to know your car, and it also, you get a great sence of acomplishment when your done.
I removed the stock muff, and installed a performance one.
It needed a few adapters when I just grabbed from the shelf in Discout Auto. A little dishsoap and hammering and the mew Muffler was on.
Of course, now I have my new bracket, I have to take it all off to reposition the Muff so its not so "Visible". :-)
Hell, I saved myself over $400 with my geo by replacing the wheel barings myself. All I had was my own enginuity (which meant doom from the start) and my hains manual (which saved me!)

Why don't you just change the muffler for a quieter one? It would be much simpler than changing all or part of the exhaust, and seeing as the muffler is what makes it quieter or louder it's all you would need to change. It would be much cheaper and simpler.
