Which belt? Is it ok to drive like this?

its fine to drive but, its just your main belt is a little old and its time to change.

Have you changed it since you got it??

I havent replaced it since I had the car - I have had it 18 months. The car is Dec 2001. how come the noise is only at idle and with the electrics on - i.e. lights and Rear defroster on

It takes more Power to run the Lights and Rear Defroster, so in turn the alternator kicks in more to run the a/c fan.(for the rear defroster) that belt is conected to the alternator.
