Default head port and polish or swap?/ timeing concerns

going to have to do something to the head its a sohc 2.0 and i need more power but my question is. What is the best way to remove and install the head with out loosing timing? I will prolly buy a head from howell or have mine done not sure but whats the best way to keep the timing? I got a cam cam gear and gonna order oversized valves, valve springs and retainers and will have them all installed by the machine shop just worried about the whole timeing thing. Thanks a lot for all your help.

right before you take the timing belt of just make sure the cam is not 180 out. for extra insurance you can make your own marks with some whiteout. it is pretty hard too mess it up but not impossible. the cam gear only goes on there one way. If you gonna do all the work I hope you get cam too.

What kind of port work will you have done to the head? The pocket port and the short turn ratio are where you should pick up the must cfm, the gasket matchs aren't very good and usually reduce the cfm on NA cars. As far as the timing, get a manual on the car it should draw it out for you or take it some where to get the cam installed and let then worry about the timing! Get the machine shop to flow the heads stock, then with the valves at max. cam lift and the porting so you know how many cfm you picked up!
