Default differential swap

ive been looking around on neons.org and on more than one occasion have seen differentials for sale. i have asked this question before but i didnt get a bite on it. it would be so much cheaper for me to just change my differential than to change out the whole tranny. can the 3.94 differential be swapped with the 3.55 that i have right now? i spoke with the transmission specialist and machinist who does my dads race motors and he said that it is possible but talked about having the right shaft of some sort - (he talks in circles) - if i can get my hands on a first gen 3.94 diff and a ring and pinion gear, can i get it to work??? maybe the shaft he spoke of was the one that turns the pinion gear. i dont know how the shat connects to the pinion gear, but i doubt its removeable. has anybody looked inside these trannys to this extent???
