Default RE: Header

I had someone put my header on.
It shouldn't be too hard though. The only thing I noticed that would be a pain is the fact that there isn't a great amount of space down there to work with.

the level of difficulty changes on which header you intend to buy.

you have 2 choices...

Short Tube
Long Tube

The Difference you ask??

Short tubes are simple bolt ons. Take off the old Exhaust manifold, cut to the cat, stick a collector in, attatch the header, weld, and Viola! Simple job! The only problem is there is very little room behind our little engines to work. So I suspect if you had a couple friends helping it would take maybe 3 hours or more.

The minus... you will see little gains if any. Short tube headers are a vast improvement over stock and do aleviate some addition weight (i want to say like 5-7 lbs of cast iron) but they add very little in the long run of performance.

Long tube headers on the other hand are a very different story. Long tube headers are a very big improvement over stock and short tubes alike. You have to do alot more work though. You have clearence issues with the firewall... you have to re-work the exhaust to make it fit right... and is a big no no if you have any sort of emissions testing (AT ALL) as you will never pass. It is considered a race-only mod in my book. That or your going for the meanest N/A neon around... I would say typical install time would be quite lengthy.

Mid-tube headers I have no experience with. Someone else will be able to shout out on that if need be.

I would recommend the short tube if you are looking for something simple to do and to give you some ok gains.

well said freerider..well said.. I would go with the short tube headers just because they are much more simpler to install than the others and even tho there is not much of a power gain, there is still some power gain for less money. so yeah

For the obx headers, you're not going to use the downpipe, and end up paying almost $200 dollars for JUST the header. Pacesetters will be even lesser quality and almost just as expensive.

So yeah, prices really suck for that. I'm trying to get a used R/T header.

2000-2005, all R/T's would still almost be a borla header right?

yes, an r/t exhaust manifold is the equivalant of a orla header... but they are just as hard to find now-a-days...

Default RE: Header

I put on a header and pipe I bought off ebay. Works good in the high range but the auto still is sluggish in the low and mid. Mine took all of about 1 hour to do. But I did it at work where I have a lift and air tools. The pipe replaced the cat, which is ok seeing as there isn't inspection here in Fl. The bad part is that w/o the cat the car was loud so I also added a resonator that was a little quieter and gives the car a good sound.
