Doesn't surprise me... The older the starter motor is the less it will like the cold.

i think it has less to do with the starter getting old and more with the battery and connections getting older and not as good. i know my 81 has been slow turning over lately but got a bit better after i clean connection. i know my battery is on its ways out.

Call me crazy but I have to wedge a nail in between the negative battery post and the cable for it to make good connection.

On two occasions I went to start the truck and had absolutely NOTHING, got out, wiggled the cables and she came to life...

Yeah the cables can throw a odd curve somedays.. When my positive went bad it boggled my mind.... Caused the fuel pump to run constantly for whatever reason... Lights seemed strange and buzzer sounded horrible... Replaced it with a much larger one and all is fine...

i use both top and side posts in my 81. the top post is connected to the starter and alternator and the side posts power the rest of the stuff in the cab. now the only thing i really hate is some of those aftermarket battery clamps. they allow wires to corrode. i just cleaned a fair bit of corrosion out of the terminal wires in my 81 the other day and replaced the garbage negative terminal.

Hauled some drywall to my buddies house to start his renovation. She seemed a bit peppy today. Might run some more SeaFoam through intake and this time in crankcase before oil change.

Started to put the tranny extension housing seal on this AM, turns out the extension housing is cracked. Put some JB weld on it threw the new seal in as a temp fix. Going to have to find an extension housing somewhere. Never ending I guess.. meh

New universals on the rear drive shaft.. no issues there.
