Been thinking alot about taking some welding classes, if I buy a welder though I just have my wife teach me. She is a certified welder and used to do aircraft work.
When I was young I bought a Marquette Farm welder at a yard sale. It was really nasty, rusty, and icky looking when I brought it home in my coaster wagon, so I took a wire wheel on the drill and some sand paper and stripped it clean then used rattle cans to paint it red again.
It came out pretty well but unknown to me all the years of acclimated spider webs, old paint I ground off,and a lot of new paint over spray got inside and yes, burst into flame the first time I struck an arc.
It was only a small fire and did not do any real damage we used the welder for years afterward and one of my brother in laws has it now. Needs painted again but still works great.
I was taking the welding course in high school when I got the thing. My mom had been a navy certified welder during the war and she taught me much more than I learned in school.
