See, I was under the idea that the new pipe would not allow the gases to scavenge enough and you would lose some of your high end torque. Not that we had a lot to begin with.

That is the reason why I did it. The cat itself was in pretty good shape, but in the last three weeks or so, I had noticed the truck getting a little louder every time the pipes got hot and then they cooled down. Finally, after hanging out at a little BBQ one night, I fired up the truck and it sounded like my muffler fell off. I got out to make sure that I wasn't dragging pipe anywhere and then went home.

Next morning, I crawled under to look and saw that the pipe coming out the back of the cat had rusted off leaving a 1" gap.

I really didn't want to drop $200 on a high flow cat, so I dropped $30.00 in parts and welded this up.

It's just to keep the truck sounding good while I work on getting a new truck. After that, and the whole thing is getting redone.

Keep in mind though, after the holiday weekend, we are starting on the front of the truck, the dents from it, and the rest of my dents and scratches. Final product will be a straight bodied truck with a brand new paint job.

97's have 2 pipes in and one out so they can't use the universal cat without some modification to the stock y-pipe.

It doesn't matter anyways. Still saved $50.00 over putting anything else in.

Great job Chris! Keeping the old 318 alive just a little bit longer.

Thanks. It sounds nasty. As soon as I can get my last clamp put on there, I'll have an exhaust video.

You wouldn't happen to have a video of it before connecting it to the pipes with the muffler on them would ya?

When I got my Camaro, the first thing I did was chop off the muffler and it already had a gutted cat so I know about the "nasty" sound. The vibration from just standing next to it was unbelievable.

Actually, I do.... I have two of them. The one where I went and played in the snow, and the one where I'm demonstrating a seafoam treatment.

As soon as I get the last clamp on, I'll post all three videos.
