Winter Driving and a 20-car pileup
I don't know what it is about crash videos, but I can't get enough of them! This one involves cars/trucks/jeeps/minivans, including a couple of late-model Dodge trucks. It gets boring in the middle, but stick with it. There's more action towards the end.

Jesus... let off the brakes and steer! I saw most people with tires locked up.. You CANNOT steer when your tires are locked... I have driven on hills like that that where solid ice with water on them(can't even stand on it) and done better than that.. Momentum and knowing how to drive will do a lot. That guy in the green ford obviously knew how to drive... 99% of video's like this one is peoples lack of driving skill in that weather. Its automatic for me if i start sliding i keep of the brakes and steer.. I rather be doing 45mph at the bottom of the hill then 0mph and be piled up in to a car, or worse a person. If you can't steer when your off the brakes, a lot of the time in a 4wd(if its engaged) blipping the throttle will let the front tires grab a little friction there for letting you steer. A lot of people would **** themselves seeing the roads out here during winter(snow from oct-may) and i living in the heart of the rockies... (our driveway can be impassable and its about 3 times as steep as that hill, yet i have never once hit anything..now i probably will tmrw....) But again practice is key in winter driving, and not panic-ing when you start in to a slide.. Usually first snowfall i will go slide around in 2wd and 4wd and purposly spin out and correct it and purposly hit steep icy hills and practice controlling. Some of you may not think any of what i said is relevant but i grew up driving in snow and ice, and i have yet to hit anything or even go in the ditch.
You'd think that people in ****ing Colorado would know how to drive in snow and ice. Bunch of jackasses.

But then, judging by the Colorado driver's license in my wallet, I'm a jackass too.
Well I guess I should chime in here since this happened not far from my house.
Actually, ice condition are not that unusual here. Yes, our winters are milder, but that usually means we get less deep snow. Ice is pretty common though because anytime we get even a small amount of snow, it melts during the day, then freezes back at night. The unique thing about this last storm was that the weather had been really nice leading up to this storm, so the roadways where very warm. Then, when this snow hit, the first part of snow immediatly melted on the warm roads. Then temps tanked to single digit and below 0. This caused the wet road to freeze into some pretty bad ice. Then as snow continued to fall, the ice was covered with snow. So then it became misleading. It appeared that you just had 4-5 inches of snow on the ground, which under normal circumstances is not that big of a deal. But with the layer of ice underneath, it was a different story. This is what caught people off-guard I think. Also, this was the first real storm we have had this year, so people usually suck at driving on snow and ice until they get used to it again (plus we have a lot of Cali transplants, so imagine them on ice).
One other thing to point out about this video is that this hill actually has a reputation for being bad. In fact, some winters, they will block it off and make people go around to the next block because this is just a notorious bad spot. Not sure why it was open this day.
I'm not defending the way these people drove (especially the guy in the white truck), but as someone who lives here, it is worth pointing out that this was not just a simple snow storm, and it was not just an average stretch of road. That part has not been conveyed with this video, which has become quite a hit.

By the way, this was the same storm and the ice that I gave my Duratrac review on the other day.

On a side note, i've mentioned before that I have a little gas sipper car (Suzuki Swift)that I use just to save money to commute to work. Someone slid into it as it was parked at my house. They left a note on it. Smashed the bumper up and put a small dent in the door. This was a fun storm.
