My new toy
A friend gave this to me but he wanted to keep the trailer.
I said ok and put my broken down boat on a set of tires so I could fix up the trailer to hold it.
About a week later he told me that he found another boat with a trailer and asked if I wanted to buy his trailer for $250.
I agreed.
It is a 1978 Ranger Aztec with a 140 hp Evinrude on it. Everything is original on the boat aside from the water pump, a coil pack and a starter that were changed a couple years ago. For them to last almost 30 years being run every summer shows the longevity of Evinrude motors.
The only thing wrong with this boat is the trim motor won't go down and the compression is different by 30 psi between the lowest and the highest cylinders.
So I'm thinking some new piston rings and figuring out the trim deal and I'll have a decent boat.
I've taken this boat out a few times and it's fast and loads of fun.
It still runs but my friends boat mechanic said that he doesn't know how long it'll be before it stops running due to the compression variance.

I went out to the lake with the guy that gave me the boat on his pontoon boat today.
We didn't do much fishing before the ignition switch crapped out on it and we had to get a tow back to the boat ramp. The trolling motor had issues too. Lots of fun being dead in the water.
He was telling me that I should take the 90hp Evinrude that's in the back yard and throw it on the Ranger until I get the 140 rebuilt since that one got rebuilt years ago and got run one time before being put away. Then I would be able to use my boat while the 140 is on a stand waiting for me to rebuild it. I just might do that. The steering connections might be interchangeable since they're both Evinrude. The 90hp is a 1988 model, so it's 10 years younger.

I walked down there and looked at the other motor today.
Turns out that it's an Evinrude Starflite 135. It also turns out that those motors were only made between 1973 and 1976.
The other Evinrude came with a boat that I got from a friend for $200 a couple years ago. He was going to fix it up and didn't get very far past getting the Evinrude rebuilt and putting a new floor in it. That other boat has a Mercury 70 or 80 or 90 hp mounted on it that needs some love and the Evinrude is sitting on the floor of it. I don't know why he thought the one in the boat was only 90hp (that's what he told me it was).
