Default Dont run straight water in your coolant system

My buddy just spent 1/2 a day changing his water pump, still leaked ,changed timing chain cover gasket , still leaked. His coolant (water) was totally reddish brown I told him to check his t-stat gasket, it was cruddy as hell only a few months old. I also told him his t-stat housing was probobly rusted out and sure enough it was. I found a bb sized hole in it. you can save alot of trouble by using coolant like you should.

How long was he running straight water for? If he's running just water for a long time, something tells me he's really not up on maintenance.

your, uh, 'buddy' should also realize that water becomes highly acidic after a nominal amount of time in a cooling system without the coolant/anti-freeze available to counter balance it.. also, tap water is a no-no, so tell your 'buddy' that using pre-mix is the way to go as it uses demineralized water in it's mix.

Thanks for the tip. But I'd rather use straight water instead of this kind.
