Happy Birthday to Me!!!
Ours has two classifications (or did when I was an instructor). If you c=sucessfully comoleted the range exercise with a pistol (revolver) you could only carry that, if you completed with a SA handgun you could carry either. As instructor, we had to qualify (with a higher score) with both.

Wow gdstock. All I had to do was walk in, fill out one form, pay a fee, give up my prints, and they will mail it to me when the background check goes through. No range stuff, I don't even own a handgun at the moment.
I am not sure of Texas's current requirments, but ours used to require a 15 hour class with a test where participant had to make at least 90%, and range proficiency, firing 50 rounds and scoring 70% as well, After passing the class and range exercise, one could make application with fingerprint card and paying fee.
I was kind of uncomfortable with the requirment of 70%. As instructors, we had longer class (always at DPS academy in Austin), and had to qualify with pistol and SA handgun, and score at least a 90% on all three exercises.

You can also take a class for a Utah permit.. I am going to be doing that as soon as I can get some free time.. Here in PA the class cost 75 bucks.. The good thing about that is there is 34 states that will honor the Utah permit.. So that permit along with your state will usually have you covered for most states.. There is still a few though that wont honor it.
Y'all have a two week waiting period? Shiet. In Texas it's like 5 minutes!
my first "legal" beer was budweiser, first "legal" liquor was capt'n morgan perrot bay coconut rum. 15 straight shots of that... lets just say my legs couldnt hold me up very well.
