Default Overheating

2001 Dodge 2500 Diesel

My pick up has been over heating lately. Gets almost into the red sometimes.

I have talked to several people and have received serveral answers from a busted head gasket to the thermostat to clogged radiator.

Any idea where to start first??

Is coolant clear or stained looking? Any oily substance in coolant? Any milky substance in the oil?

You can have coolant checked for hydrocarbon content. This is a sign of exhaust getting into cooling (gasket or head usually).

Have radiator pressure tested. Check condition of radiator cap.

Does the truck really act like it's running hot or is the temp gauge just showing it's overheating?

Different situation but one day my Blazer shot well past the red line on the temp gauge, but still ran fine, turned out to be a bad thermostat.

Did you fix it? If not, I'd start with a thermostat...
