Default Cant get the axle seal to stay put

2001 ram 1500.. Replaced the drive side front seal no problems. Go to seat the passenger side seal and every time I go to put the axles back in , the axles pop the seal back out.. Any suggestions as what I am doing wrong?

I know, but your probably not wanting or willing to pay $200 for the right tool to install that seal correctly. You can do a search here on DF for homemade install tools however.

I made my own out of all thread, 1-1/2" socket washers and nuts.
As I read read on how one made his tool... This is now day number 2 trying to put this seal in. Guess all I can do is keep trying.

are you seating the seal into its cavity.

this is not pretty, but i had to come up with the right inner and outer diameter to keep the seal lined up with the puller. the inner diameter fit the threaded rod. the outer diameter was the closest larger washer i could find, ground down to fit the seal. it took a couple of hours of finagling to make it.

others have used a seal driver from a kit.

Seal is not seated all the way to its bore. As you look from the cad housing to the seal bore, it's quite deep, and getting the seal go straight is PITA. I have correct tool made (turned on lathe) for installation, and still ended up using drift punch and a hammer to align seal before it started to go in. IIRC, when fully seated, the seal is about 3/8" deep from the side of the cad opening.

Also having 2 people helps. One to push the axle shaft in and one to guide the end of it through the seal from the CAD opening). And make sure the composite bushing is still in the end of the shaft.
