Question On Catalytic Converter

So when I do my exhaust I was thinking of getting a Magnaflow hi-flow spun cat. But should I do that or keep my stock cat and just gut it....or will it throw a code??? How much difference is there in power and air flow between the two? Thanks.

Removing my catalytic converter has had the single biggest impact on my truck performance since I did the plenum repair.

Cut out the cat and welded in some pipe.

Do you have emissions tests? Just gutting the cat or removing it will throw a code but its easy to fix and make go away.

to each his own, but i gutted my cat and it sounded like absolute ****. i couldn't stand it, so after spending a couple of hours patiently gutting it, i removed the whole thing.

if you do anything, be aware that you can sell the cat, or its innards for real money. i got $49 for the guts. i think stewie got about $75 for the whole cat.

by the way, i've not gotten a CEL after removal of the cat

I removed it while living in Georgia, no emissions there. I don't believe there are any here Southwest Va, but there is emissions testing in Northern Va near DC.

If I start with a clean slate (disconnect battery for a couple of minutes) it usually takes 2-3 days before the CEL comes on. Just haven't gotten the non fouler trick yet to put in.

Still running old O2 sensors though.

But I agree with DH, either remove or replace, don't gut.

Go with the Magnaflows I did//Love the sound and performance..

Thanks for your replys guys it's a huge help. Yes in north east Ohio we do have emissons testing, and they mirrior it too (I know it sucks). So I think I'll get the Magnaflow, it will be legal, flow good, and sound good too. And if I have to I'll do the non fouler trick on it. And when I sell my old cat, the money from that should pay for the new one.:D

Probably the best way to go. Shouldn't have to do the non-fouler trick.

Big Joe C 01-07-2013 05:06 PM

Really? No non fouler...I can still use stock o2?

stewie01 01-07-2013 05:11 PM

High flow cat should fit in place of the old one, shouldn't need to use the non fouler trick. Stock O2 should be fine.
