Question On Catalytic Converter

So when I do my exhaust I was thinking of getting a Magnaflow hi-flow spun cat. But should I do that or keep my stock cat and just gut it....or will it throw a code??? How much difference is there in power and air flow between the two? Thanks.

stewie01 01-06-2013 08:09 PM

Removing my catalytic converter has had the single biggest impact on my truck performance since I did the plenum repair.

Cut out the cat and welded in some pipe.

97ramrod1500 01-06-2013 08:25 PM

Do you have emissions tests? Just gutting the cat or removing it will throw a code but its easy to fix and make go away.

dhvaughan 01-06-2013 08:34 PM

to each his own, but i gutted my cat and it sounded like absolute ****. i couldn't stand it, so after spending a couple of hours patiently gutting it, i removed the whole thing.

if you do anything, be aware that you can sell the cat, or its innards for real money. i got $49 for the guts. i think stewie got about $75 for the whole cat.

by the way, i've not gotten a CEL after removal of the cat

I removed it while living in Georgia, no emissions there. I don't believe there are any here Southwest Va, but there is emissions testing in Northern Va near DC.

If I start with a clean slate (disconnect battery for a couple of minutes) it usually takes 2-3 days before the CEL comes on. Just haven't gotten the non fouler trick yet to put in.

Still running old O2 sensors though.

But I agree with DH, either remove or replace, don't gut.

steelyd 01-07-2013 12:43 AM

Go with the Magnaflows I did//Love the sound and performance..

Big Joe C 01-07-2013 04:56 PM

Thanks for your replys guys it's a huge help. Yes in north east Ohio we do have emissons testing, and they mirrior it too (I know it sucks). So I think I'll get the Magnaflow, it will be legal, flow good, and sound good too. And if I have to I'll do the non fouler trick on it. And when I sell my old cat, the money from that should pay for the new one.:D

Probably the best way to go. Shouldn't have to do the non-fouler trick.

Big Joe C 01-07-2013 05:06 PM

Really? No non fouler...I can still use stock o2?

stewie01 01-07-2013 05:11 PM

High flow cat should fit in place of the old one, shouldn't need to use the non fouler trick. Stock O2 should be fine.

Big Joe C 01-07-2013 05:14 PM

Sweet

stewie01 01-07-2013 05:16 PM

But if your cat was/is clogged it's probably time for new O2 sensors anyway... Stay away from Bosch.

Big Joe C 01-07-2013 05:17 PM

Ok good to know thanks. I'm doing full exhaust system at the beggining of summer. So thats then cat is going in.

Big Joe C 01-07-2013 05:18 PM

How can I check if its clogged or not???

Have you done the plenum work yet? If so you can bet it's clogged.

I cut mine out about 9 months after the plenum repair and it was night and day difference on power.

lbzrango 01-07-2013 11:14 PM

On my truck i have the cat that has 2 inlets and one outlet, how have you guys by passed this?

dhvaughan 01-08-2013 07:19 AM

either weld in a short section of universal Y-pipe. 2 inch inlet, 2.5 inch outlets.
example only (not correct size).
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Flo-Pro-Y200...e57247&vxp=mtr

or replace the entire front pipe section all the way to the muffler.

Yes I've done my plenum with the Hughes kit. Humm I dont feel like doing my cat now when I'm doing the whole exhaust at the beggining of summer.

I thought you had but couldn't remember. But you can bet the truck that the cat is clogged.

Big Joe C 01-09-2013 04:58 PM

So with it being clogged, other than robbing power, will it hurt any to drive it till summer when I replace everything???

How can you say that?

I don't see the OP posting about engine operation problems....

The increased exhaust back pressure not only robs power, but it can raise combustion chamber temps. which can lead to head cracking, a pretty common problem on these thinwall head castings.

Just using my own personal experience. I cut my cat out 9 months after I did the plenum change, not because of engine performance issues, the truck was running perfectly, but because I wanted it gone, and sure enough it was clogged up. Truck is much more responsive and even holds overdrive much better with the cat gone too..

How does it sound without the cat? You got a muffler on there?

Stock muffler at the moment. Not the best video but;

Little rapsy when you let off from getting on it. It's quiet when driving though, you don't notice it.

Wanna put in a MagnaFlow sooner or later...

Johnn123 01-09-2013 06:03 PM

I actually quite like that! Might have to pull mine off, cept I got emissions round here -_-
Not to thread jack but how did you remove and install pipe?

Removing the pipe is a PITA because there isn't much room between the top of the pipe an the bottom of the cab, but I used a hack saw and an air grinder, then welded in the new pipe, which for the same lack of clearance on the top is a PITA too.

Johnn123 01-09-2013 06:44 PM

It all the same size? Ive never actually looked that far up on mine lol

No. The cat inlet is 3" and the exhaust pipe after the cat is 2.5". Had to get creative as none of the part stores in town had a 3" to 2.5" reducer, bastards.

+10000 to that. Had a SIGNIFICANT increase in low end torque and overall performance when switching to an O/R Y, even on a 100k km truck. The driveability on the highway was so much better, and I gained around 2mpg.

Feel lucky that you have a a SI/SO cat that you could just cut and replace. I have a '97 and had to go with a Jeg's offroad Y and which I need to swap out for the stock one every 2 years to do my emissions test. It is a PITA but totally worth it for the substantial performance/mileage gain/sound increase.

BTW you really need a muffler for that thing, it has the potential to sound infinitely better than it does now

Much agree. MagnaFlow is my choice when I've got some coin to throw at it :D

dlyter09 01-09-2013 07:24 PM

I have a magnaflow glasspack on my truck along with a gutted cat.. Sounds pretty darn good to me.. I could attempt to get a video tomorrow if ya want..

Well I'd like to hear how the glasspack sounds, but the burn out video would be nice too :D

Dont mind me dropping the phone.. It is also sideways and cant fix it.. I will try and get a better one tomorrow..

stewie01 01-09-2013 07:41 PM

Well what exhaust I can make out does sound pretty good..

dlyter09 01-09-2013 07:45 PM

Yea its hard to hear.. I will get a better one tomorrow and there will be no worries about burnout noises since their is no transmission lol.. It was a 30 dollar glasspack that I welded onto a short piece of pipe coming out of the gutted cat.. Dumps right after the cab

dodge dude94 01-10-2013 10:17 AM

I am looking at a magnaflow cat on amazon. $100...gonna run be $200 for the cat and o2 sensors. I can't save money fast enough. :(

dlyter09 01-10-2013 12:53 PM

I got 2 videos.. One of my ram with gutted cat and magnaflow glass pack.. The other one is the Hemi.. Has magnaflow cats magnaflow muffler.. Still waiting for it to upload so I can post them
