Eating coils
so my father has a 97 ram 2500 360 automatic. It was sputtering so we did a full tune up. That eliminated, that issue. but like a week or two later the brand new ignition coil ****, so replaced it again. Now the coil died again, got a new replacement. Any ideas what might be killing the coils, we are both scratching our heads trying to figure it out.
What brand of coils are you using stick to oem if possable. Check all your grounds carefully. Next check the volts going to the coil, back in the day 12v was max for a coil I think thats max for these trucks need as well.
From the FSM:
"If the ignition coil is being replaced, the secondary spark plug cable must also be checked. Replace cable if it has been burned or damaged.
Arcing at the tower will carbonize the cable boot, which, if it's connected to a new ignition coil, will cause the coil to fail."

They are BWD coils, cheapies i know. But I put one months ago (six or so) in my 98 ram and have had no issues. As for the wire, Im quite sure that he replaced it with the tune up. But Ill check on it now anyhow.
