Default Superchips 3840 or 3842

So goin with superchip for my first tuner. I get these packages for $300 new and I feel I wont get the most out of an SCT with the mild mods I have. I'd also like to keep my 195o thermostat.

Whats the difference between these two other than the shape? wich is the better choice?

The 3842 is the "new style" look. It has the same tunes as the 3840, just with a different case. If you find a used 3840, it'll work with your truck.

(copied from another site)

i would say its just a newer model.
oh if you get this soon post back results. i will be ordering one in about 2 weeks.

Yeah keep us updated. I like my SCT and hopefully it'll start proving itself when I get custom tunes after my cam and m1. Canned tunes really didn't do too much.

You probabbly didn't have the death flash since you have a 97. You lucky. That's why you didn't see much of a difference. That and your 35@ with 3.55 gets.

Okay so....

From 1/8th tank left of 85 I filled up on Shell 91 "V-Power". Downloaded the updates last night, took about 20 minutes.

A little stock/tune info: 3:55 gears, I have the "Death Flash", I have an early TCC lock up issue from 2nd-3rd (suspected needing a computer reprogram, re-learning the TPS only worked for about 5 miles), and 3rd - OD is weak and kinda sloppy.

First tried the "Performance 91" tune. Drove about 20 miles to work. 30mph-65mph speed limits, a few large hills as well as some mellow grades. Immediatly I noticed all of my shifts were solid and smooth. Getting up to speed was much easier, once at speed acceleration in 3rd or OD was smoother and took a lot less effort. When decellerating right at 45mph OD drops to 3rd (never noticed this before, if it did this before it was so soft I never noticed). However durring accelerationg in OD around 2200 rpm climbing a mellow grade without a downshift, I get consistant light pinging...

After work decided to try the "87 Octane" tune for the drive home. Same awesome transmission shifts and downshifts, less power than the performance tune yet still a noticable increase over stock tune. No pinging what so ever. This is where i'll prolly keep the tune for now.

I may order some 8mm wires and an MSD coil to try and get better spark, try the "Performance 91" tune again and see were I lie with pinging issues then.

When I get a worthy payload I can update on the towing tune. Over all I am pretty happy with my purchase. I have yet to try any of the advanced tune options....

To put it another way... going 65mph there is a hill I climb every day to work, by the time I get to the top of that hill I am only going 45-55mph. With the 87 tune I was going 62mph by the top of the hill. That was my test to see if I had gained anything

I hear a lot of people just leave it on the tow tune.

Interesting, I'll give that one a try tomorrow then.

I'm not a fan of the towing tune for daily driving. High shift point into 2nd and touchy on the downshifts. Would have been great if I was towing or had a payload. Think I am going to stick with the 87 for a bit until I resolve the performance pinging issue.
