It could be like the frame for the canvas top section of Jeep doors (they have pins/rods that slide into tubes in the top of the door), but instead of just a frame for the canvas, it'll be the top section of your door.
The width of the flat at the door section will help provide stability of the upper section, along with dowel length.
Put a rubber seal on the bottom of the insert piece to limit draft and rattle.
Maybe a tag at the front and back with a wing nut to secure it, or just suitcase latches on the inside.
Replace the window seal with a canvas/plastic zip down window.

^I like that. I'll have to take a look at my buddies LJ version for up close and personal.

Thanks for the input!

Maybe not as light and easy to throw around as a canvas door, but for daily driving, a little more finished looking.

Google "Cherokee half doors" and look at the images... there should be plenty of inspiration there... seems plenty of XJ guys go the half door route.

Nah the weight is good. Needs to handle some rain without folding. Also we get good winds too, I mean I'm kind of like a sail....barge...thing. Lol

Indeed I've perused many XJ. I've seen some nice finishes.

Taped this today in 104f...gah!

I've adjusted it a little since then.

Can you relocate the speaker to the other opening (back lower corner), then you could take a little more out of the front edge.
Also, can you move the handle back 6" or so and shorten the rod?
Another thought: you can take the door lock rod out... after all, locks only stop honest thieves, and with an open or soft doors, locks aren't doing anything.
