With new fans in hand, I decided to fit them today.
Whilst they generally look the same, the mounting holes are in different locations (~5/8”)... no big deal, I’ll just drill new holes, put in some rivnuts , and I’m good to go... right up until I realize I have 6 rivnuts left, and need 8... oh well, I guess I’m just mounting one today... By the way, I now have 3 sets of mounting holes.
I also had to change the connector... also no big deal.
This is what happens... the drive pin (a roll pin) snaps (usually just one side), and you get a small vibration during rundown (no load)... this progressively gets worse until the other side breaks... then it just chews out what's left of the hub.
This is a Derale fan... the Spal has solid pin... and from memory the Flex-a-lite is a roll pin... they all failed the same.
