Well, sadly, my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 finally just gave up.
She's got some sort of electrical issue - I suspect that critters or age, or both, attacked the main engine wiring harness between the ECM and the engine compartment fuse box, and I don't know enough about wiring to tear into it and find out.
I've replaced a bunch of parts on her over the years, so there are a lot of good parts, but the frame is cracked, body is rough, and of course, it isn't running. She's been sitting for a year as I alternated trying to throw parts at her and trying to sell her whole without success in either.
So now, I'm going to part her out, and on many well-known engine parts, I have an idea what to ask, but from what I can see, the most value is in other parts I hadn't considered.
Aside from looking up auctions on E_b.a.y., how do I determine fair prices? I've already had someone ask about the "cats." How much should I charge for those? Any help that can be offered, I appreciate!
Sorry to hear it. I'm finally giving mine more attention to try to keep her from following the same fate.
I can't help you with pricing - sorry.
But can you give more detail on your truck? Engine size; 4 vs 2 WD; whether it's a Sport, XLT, etc.; if it's a quad cab; bed length; etc.
I'm sure others here, like me, would be interested in some or all of those parts. Would you be interested in selling the entire truck to one buyer so they can use it for a parts truck for themselves?
I'm in North Alabama - are you anywhere in the vicinity?
I agree with Moonpie. Where are you located? It's possible someone near you is looking for parts. I often buy whole vehicles for parts. Especially the hardware and small stuff. Fenders are reproduced. That weird little connector behind the dash isn't.
Well as far buying the entire truck, I'm out. Depending on exactly where in SE Kansas you are, you are ~11+ hours away from me. (Unless your truck is a twin sister to mine, in which case I might consider it.)
Could you please post the details (example info in my first post above) of your truck?
Depending on exactly where in SW Indiana that @ol' grouch is (and again where exactly you are), you're probably ~7-8 hours away. That might or might not be too far for him.

I'm right where Indiana give Kentucky and Illinois a wedgie. Alas, right now I'm car poor. I'm trying to get my Furd started as a guy wants to trade a '74 D500 for it. I even had a dealer trained mechanic stop by. He worked on them new. He couldn't figure out the issue either. We're pretty sure the injectors aren't firing. I really do NOT want to pull those. Dodge and Ram trucks have nothing on this thing for aggravation.
I looked on my map program and I'm 600, and then some, miles from Wichita.
Thanks for the interest, guys - I'm waaaaay down in the southeast corner of the state, about an hour each from the Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma borders. Neosho County, if that helps ya at all...far too far from most everyone I'm sure.
But, my good ole Bessie is a 2001 Ram 1500 ST, 6cyl, 3.9L engine, 2wd automatic, short bed. Man, I've loved this truck. If I had the slightest clue how to fix her, I'd have done it, and nobody in my neck of the woods knows squat about wiring, either. And the single solitary Dodge dealer in town won't touch anything older than 2010. :'(
If there are specific parts you're looking for, let me know, and I'll be glad to look at the Mopar part numbers on what I have. Otherwise, my tags are up for renewal at the end of July, so I have a month to pull off what I think I can sell, stash them securely, and sell the rest to the metal recycler in town.
Here's some of the info I posted in my for sale listings locally:
Crank, no start. NO BUS on odometer. PCM is ok - was swapped out to test and put back in.
NEW PARTS-
All new fuel pump, fuel rails and all 6 injectors replaced in 2013
Alternator 2013
Brakes and rotors 2014
Front ball joints 2014
Water pump & tensioner pulley 2016
Pickup coil, plugs, wires, cap/rotor 2016
Crankshaft sensor 2018
Starter 2018
Serpentine belt 2018
Blower motor resistor? 2018/19
Plugs, wires, cap & rotor (again) 2019
Ignition switch 2019
Battery Oct 2019
Blower motor 2020
Crank sensor (again) 2021
The bad-
Hood must be strapped down / propped up. Hinges are busted.
No windshield washer reservoir/pump. It came to me without one, and I never worried about it.
Small EGR leak/code, never caused any problems.
Governor's Pressure Sensor code triggered, but never had a problem running/driving. No tranny issues at all in the almost 10 yrs I've had her.
As far as the entire truck, that's out for me as a lot of it won't match up to mine. And as far as specific parts, I haven't yet made a list of the things I need.
Hopefully someone here close by to you will see this and want everything!
Thanks Moonpie, I understand! If you think of something you might need, hit me up. I have no problem piecing it out, I just didn't have a clue what some things might be worth, to know what to take off and save for potential buyers. There's always that one obscure part you don't think of, until you need it and no one has it...

How much room do you have to store stuff? The drivetrain is always good for cores. Engine and transmission can be sold for instance. My engine is good but I've had other trucks that they were worn out. Grab a good used engine, new timing chain and expansion plugs and drop it in. I sold a fellow a used transmission once and told him to rebuild it. He dropped it in and it worked just fine. Your body is a bit rough, but I've seen worse. People farther north would love to have some of those parts. You might have a little rust, they have a LOT of rust.
Looking at a map, I'me due east of you. That might mean that like me, you are on the edge of the rust belt. 50 miles north of me, cars dissolve and 50 miles south, they just get surface rust. If you have the room to store the parts, I would pull;
The doors. They may have rust but might be more solid than some north of you. $100 each
Hood and grill $150, or $300-350 for the doghouse
Bed. Even if it has rust over the wheel wells, it might be better than one north of you. $300-400. Maybe more if it's solid as it's a short bed
Engine, even not running, it's a good core $300-600 depending on it runs and if it's a 6 or 8
Transmission, ditto $300
Rear end. If the truck is 4X4, pull the front end also. They will be gear ratio matched.
Rear window
Wheels and tires of course. $300-800 depending on tread and type of wheel.
The inner plastic parts don't last on these. I see you have a cap on the dash. However, the steering wheel, ad other parts might be saleable.
Radiator core
The seats may or may not sell
Basically, anything you have room to store can be pulled and sold. I'd look on craigslist to see what people are asking for parts. I don't know how they salt the roads where you're at, but like I said, the little rust you have may be nothing to someone 50-100 miles north. You will make more money parting it out than whole, but you'll have to store parts until they sell. The cab, someone might want it but it's a fairly heavy assembly and not easy to move around.
The prices I listed are from similar trucks being parted out here. I think the bed might really sell as it's a short bed. Otherwise, list the truck as a PARTS truck with cracked frame for maybe $1500. You can always come down if someone is there with cash in hand. Salvage yards will give you maybe $300-500, or less.
Besides CL, don't forget the classifieds here on this site. Just takes lots of pictures and people can see what you have I think that short bed will sell fast as most were long beds. I reran the miles for going to Oswego and it's still an 8 hour drive and 490 miles in a truck that gets 15 mpg at best.
