Default Transmission mechanical whine.

OK you Tranny Specialist. Transmission has a mechanical whine in second and drive, noise goes away when put in lower gear, I did this with the truck up on jacks. The truck shifts smooth and works great. Fluid changed last year with a repair on the O/D unit, same kind of noise only in O/D. The fluid is nice and bright pink and clear.

1.- What the heck is it?
2.- Where should I go for repairs? (Nova Scotia-Canada)
3.- Or should I replace the transmission? (hopefully not)

Cheers Kayakman

Only mention of a "whine" in the FSM:

Thanks TMS Bill.

I just took my 98 Ram to the Dodge Dealer near me. The noise I thought was coming from the transmission was coming from the rear axle. It was the sound that carried up the Drive Shaft.

The mechanic found that I had an after market axle carrier which had failed on it's bearings. Now I have owned this truck since new. But back in 2001 I had a real problem with surging in the motor, so this dealer threw everything at this truck (thousands $$$$). In the end it was a bad computer telling that everything was wrong, cause by the coil wire arking to one of the fuel injectors and then back feeding to the computer.

Part is being shipped tonight and will be installed tomorrow.

The dealer installed an aftermarket carrier to repair an engine surge? [>:]

Yes they did. When they called me yesterday and said what had failed, and then ask me did I know I had an aftermarket carrier. I said no, but I know how it got there.
Got the truck back this afternoon, works great.
For that kind of money it better LOL
