Default Brake Problems

I have a 98 Dodge Ram Sport. I bought it about 6 months ago. Ever since I had it the rear brakes have been acting up. Occasionally I will barely put on the brakes and the rear brakes will slam on. If it on anything but a road they lock up and slide. It seems like it's something electrical just by the nature of things. I'm also not 100% certain that the ABS is working correctly, but I didn't bother with that because frankly I don't like ABS. The light for ABS isn't on. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ross

sounds like they may be mis-adjusted. not too sure about the newer brakes systems though. I would stop into a brake shop for a free estimate...

I also hadthat problem, like many others, with the rear brakes locking up especially after it rained. I decided to do my rear brakes and install new wheel cylinders (https://dodgeforum.com/m_498851/tm.htm) at the same time.

There aren't enough O's in smoooth at how my brakes work now. Never had a lock up since. Found my old cylinders leaking a littlebut beyond that nothing very obvious. Not saying that the oversized wheel cylinder helped in the lock-up, just saying for others reading this, while you are in there and if you have a 2500/3500, consider the cylinderswap. The new shoes and turning the drums, really did the trick. I used NAPA brake shoes.

Good luck.

So were the cylinders the problem or should I just go in and replace the shoes first and see if that heals things? (I'm kinda broke currently, haha)

You probably have contaminated brake linings. That's usually the reason for brakes "grabbing".

BTW ... the wheel cylinder upgrade isn't just for the 2500/3500 crowd.
