Battery or Alternator?
I recently installed a Prodigy brake controller on my 98 Ram with 105K miles. The controller/trailer worked well on a recent drive. I parked the truck for 48 hours with the trailer still attached to my truck. Well today, I go out to the truck and it's absolutely dead. I jump it with no problem, but it will not idle on it's own. I can drive around the farm as long as the RPM's don't dip below 1K. Gauge reads 14V. Also, the alternator power supply wire is exposed in a place in the rubber covering. What would cause the vehicle to start OK, but not idle? I wonder if I tapped into a power wire that is a constant drain somehow. The trailer does have a battery operated break-away system if that adds to the confusion.
i had something like that happen to me where i would push the clutch in and it would go down to idle and not idle took it to the shop ended up putting a new battery in and it idled fine after that it was werid

These dodges are weird when it comes to idling....i had the same problem until i found this...http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/gas/Trouble/Problems.htm....if you look at the first few lines, it says battery. replacing the battery on mine cured this problem both times i've had a battery fail. Even had one dodge that wouldn't idle with a loose battery strap, started fine though.
battery
my stock mopar battery started to die .. wouldnt hold a good charge for long.. the night that it finally went .. ( 30 mins late for work too) i got it jumped but it wouldnt hold idle.. it would just die.. i think its because the trucks elec. system runs directly off the battery and the alt is only there to maintain the batts. charge.. not to actually charge it.. most alts produce their advertised amperage at higher RPMS (between 800 to 1400 ish.. depends on amp output/ make/model) so it would run the truck at higher idle (feathering the throttle) and would just die at low idle
