Are all engine oil the same?
I've been reading on the web about all the major engine oils, store brand oils and synthetics. Some web pages say for the most part oil is oil and will do the same if change regularly, and other say that isn't true. One page I read said that consumer reports did a story about all oils and tried them in NYC cabs for like 6 months and after that they found that all the oils did the same job, no better no worse.
What do you guys think? I've been driving for like 20 years and used most of the brand except synthetics and I find that well Oil is Oil. I change my oil as close to 3000 miles as I can, and never had any major problems.

so people will say yes an some will say no,my opinion yeah oil is different i always used valvoline oil but my recent oil change was quaker state torque 4 by4 synthetic an i notice a change, the motor was alot quiter ,runned better,an i change mine every 3 to 4k miles
my opinion is that all major name brand oils are about the same, cost the same, and perform the same. the only thing i recommend is that you stick with the same brand over time. its an old wives tale, and probably no longer true, but they say each oil has its own detergent package, and that if you change oils, it might break loose some deposits. this might have been true 30 years ago, but probably not anymore. even so, i just stick with the same brand year after year. i read the report about the taxi cabs. their conclusion was that it was completely unnecessary to change your oil frequently, and that every 6-7-10k was often enough. maybe, but i'm still going to do mine every 4k. i don't use the synthetic, simply because its too expensive.
