Flame me if ya want....I don't care.
Don't the offroad editions have 2" lift blocks in the rear? So those could just be removed along with changin the springs to the stock 1500 ones and it would be lower and level. I'm prolly wrong though.

On my boat, I keep a little two step stool lashed to the lifelines for this purpose. It was~$10 @ wally world. It has wide steps, is very sturdy, and has held up to salt spray, sun, and storms for three years. I would think it would hold up pretty good just tossing it in the bed and letting it ride until you need it.
This is the one. Mine is white(sun):

Rather than spend a lot of money lowering your truck, (and probably lowering it's resale value) I would go to the store and get a folding two-step stool. This was a good suggestion by bander - I thought I would remind you that they make step stools that fold up flat and would fit behind your seat very easily. I commend you for wanting to help your Grandmother!
Try a set of these.

here's another idea. its a slide/fold away RV step. it would require some fitting, but it would sure be nice.

I don't remember the name but they make a step that folds down from under the truck when the door is opened. I know they installed some on the show Trucks one time and I've seen them advertised in some of the truck mags. From what I could tell, they drop down about 8-10 inches or so when either door is opened then fold back up under the cab when closed. I always thought they'd get ragged out in the mud but since you said you don't off road they should hold up pretty good. Jeff.
