U-Joints
I just had my rear driveshaft u-joint replaced yesterday. I had every u-joint on my truck replaced last march, but I never knew that when you are greasing u-joints, you have to pump it full of grease until you see new grease coming from all four sides. Call me stupid if you will, but I would think that the place that installs them would notice that the truck had stock u-joints and that it would be beneficial for me to know that(unless they really wanted a repeat customer). I just wanted to see if all of you guys knew that or if I am the only one who was left in the dark. Thanx
I've always been told that grease should NOT come out the caps, but the seals should begin to bulge. Cause if it's so full grease is getting out, that means the seals have come unseated and dirt can get in, causing premature wear and damage. As long as there is enough grease in them to make the seal bulge, the centripital forces of the joint rotating as you drive will force the grease to all 4 caps.
that is the same impression that i was under, but i was told different at the place that installed mine(Blumenthals of OKC). They replaced it for free since I have had them replace my driveshafts, tranny, front axle and all u-joints on the truck, oh and the rearend went out also. I thought the same thing you did, but I was suprised to hear what he told me.
When the shop did my u-joints they pumped it till they goo bulged out 4 sides and then wiped it all down. I then cleaned it better at home so no gunk sets in.
I tend to over grease things till I see the old nasty goo come out. I feel better seeing it come out knowing new grease is now in the place of the old. Only tip I have is go back in a few days to make sure you wiped it all up. I always check the grease points a few days after greasing to see if and more spit out while driving.
