Default Wobbly auto trans input shaft - Normal?

First post here.

Anyway, my '94 truck has a 318/Automatic, and the tranny crapped out on me recently. I bought a tranny from a guy parting a wrecked truck (rollover.) Today I was getting it ready to put it in my truck and I when I took off the torque converter, I noticed the tranny's input shaft is kind of wobbly. I mean you can move it left, right, up or down about 1/4". Is this normal?

I've searched here and all over the internet and the only thing I found was a spec for in/out play (It was a millimeter or two or thereabouts) which is within spec.

Thanks!

no. i'm not a trans expert but i think there should be a bushing holding it tight, and then a seal to keep it from leaking.

Thanks, now that I know to use "bushing" in my search terms I've found something. The reaction shaft does have a bushing that's supposed to support the input shaft. Guess I'm gonna rip the front pump out today and see what I find.

You may want to adjust the front band if it's loose the input shaft will wobble about as you described.

Anyway, I pulled the pump off and the band seems tight enough but the bushing does look a little scored. Can you get it out without buying the special tool?

Its normal, auto trans do that, they're suppose to.

You can look elsewhere for another opinion, buts its normal.

Thanks. I'm starting to suspect that, as the splines on the input shaft appear to be wider in diameter than the shaft itself, so there's no way you could get a bushing to fit the shaft tightly. But the bushing is pretty well scored regardless so I might replace it, but I'm still unsure how to get it out of the reaction shaft. Also it would make me feel better for pulling out the front pump and having to buy new seals to put it back in.
