First, always check to make sure you're not low on oil!

Also if your EGR valve is stuck, the engine will fire off like a diesel at higher rpm's (but not at lower).
This should be in the diagnostic codes, you can pull them by watching the flashes of the Check Engine light after you turn your Ignition ON off ON off ON

already checked and added oil. i may need to add more. Iv never heard of the egr fireing like a diesel. being a 96 i have 0bd2, so i just plug my scanner in the port. No codes, just a whine that i heard yesterday because it was about the only time i had the windows up and no radio on.
