Default surges, then engine light flashes

Hey everyone!! I have a 1998 dodge ram 1500 slt laramie with the 360 magnum v8. I started having problems today with my engine surging while trying to shift. The truck works fine while just operating at normal speeds, but when you are under 3/4 throttle or to the floor, the truck winds way up and doesnt want to shift. With the pedal to the floor, the check engine light flashes and under 3/4 throttle, the truck shifts hard and surges like crazy. My cat has been rattling really bad lately and im wondering if that has anything to do with this. Soes anybody have any idea of what the problem could be, im going to auto zone tommorow to get the codes pulled out. any help is appreciated!! thanks

First thing I would do is check AT fluid level.
If it hasn't been changed or you can't remember the last service of the fluid, a filter and fluid change would be recommended.

Then you should be able to pull the codes yourself, by turning your Ignition: ON off ON off ON
Then, watch your Check Engine light and read the flashes, it should give off the codes in 2-digit sequences with slight pauses between the digits, slightly longer pauses between codes, and the last code is a 5-5 which simply tells you it is done.
Then, you can look it up either online but I prefer the repair manual (because online I can never be sure it's for MY truck).

Helps to have pen and paper handy, also I think it works on a '98, it does on my '95.
