Dextron III??? Strange noise???
Ok, the other day I checking my dad's transmission fluid in his 1998 ram 1500 and it was low. I asked him for some tranny fluid and he went over to the shelf in the shop and got me dextron III, and it says for GM and Ford. I always thought that you used Chrysler ATF+4 in our transmissions. Am I wrong? But he has 170,000 Miles on his original trannsmission and that is all he has ever used in it, the front main is leaking really bad now though. Also, it just started, when you accelerate, there is a very strange and annoying noise, it sounds like an air compressor, you know, the psshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Sound, really loud. Anyone have any Ideas?
I only use what is recommended for my truck. Trying to cut corners can get you into trouble. As far as the noise, I'd take it to an experience mechanic and let him drive it and see what he says.
