I need someones help
I'm new to here but I have a 99 dodge ram 1500 4x4. I was pulling a buddy out of a ditch and I think I broke my front U joints . So now when I turn my wheels I have this loud clicking sound and the steering wheel jerks really hard back and forth when turning left or right. (Especially left) I think that problem is in the left wheel. The mechanic said it is a warped rotor but it doesnt shimmy when driving straight or braking...only when turning. I have looked under the truck and I can see the U joints are shot but what would be causing the jerking? I am pretty sure I can replace it myself but I just cant figure out whats causing it.
this is a stupid question, but you wouldn't have it in 4wd would you ? they will jerk and hop like crazy when trying to turn. otherwise, get it up on jack stands and turn the wheels and look/feel. also shake top/bottom and side/side. if the u-joint's needle bearings are falling out and turn sideways, then it may be 'bound up' where it can't flex back/forth/around like its supposed to. beware, replacement can be difficult because of the stupid wheel bearing.

I am just learning about4X4's and how to work on them. So im not that experienced yet. I am a quick learner though. Should I take it to a shop or get the manual out and do it myself.
Sounds to me also like it's in 4 wheel drive still. The front end will bind like a bastard if the transfer case is engaged. Even worse if you're running on dry pavement.
Good luck with your ride

provided you have a lot of patience to figure things out, some basic tools, and a willingness to learn, then always try to do it yourself. if you can't do it you can always take it somewhere as a last resort.
I put it in to 4 wheel drive and took it back out several times. It says its disengaged and feels disengaged but the LOUD *** clicking is still there when i turn left or right as well as the the jerking of the wheel. so i guess its time to rip it apart.
